Memphis Insulation Contractor
Why Should You Consider Insulation for Your Memphis Area Home?
Because Insulation Wraps Your Home in Comfort and Saves Energy.
If you home was built before 1990, your attic probably looks a little like this photo of bare, exposed and dirty attic spaces. Not only can properly installed insulation reduce utility waste by 30%, but also, it can help make your home more comfortable.
Properly installed insulation coupled with properly sealed ductwork, attic spaces and air bypasses (air leaks) can also make your home: less dirty; less dusty; less drafty; less humid in the summer; and less dry in the winter. It can also greatly improve the quality of the air you breathe in your home.
Dirty spots in your attic insulation are most often caused by air infiltration (air leaks) coupled with initial improper installation of the insulation. Most companies just cover up the old insulation with new insulation without ever addressing the air infiltration. Even brand new homes often have “dirty spots” in their insulation. That too is most often caused by improper initial installation of the insulation whereby air infiltration was ignored. If you have dirty spots on your insulation, you have been using your attic insulation as a filter for your home. The nasty stuff in the attic has been getting into your home below.
Your home’s knee walls and wall cavities are likely also missing insulation that could help make your home more comfortable and less wasteful. Especially in rooms above garages, second story rooms and any room next to an attic space – air bypasses abound. You may have noticed areas of your carpeting that stay dirty or dingy around the edges of some rooms, windows, doors and stairways – these too can be caused by air infiltration. We can solve these problems too.
Air Leaks (AKA “Drafts”)
More than any other time of year, most people notice their Memphis area homes’ air leaks in the winter. Most people call these air leaks “drafts.” You may feel these drafts around windows and doors and think these leaks are your major source of wasted energy. In most homes, however, the most significant air leaks are hidden in the attic and basement. These are the leaks that significantly raise your energy bill and make your house uncomfortable.
In cold weather, warm air rises in your house, just like it does in a chimney. This air, which you have paid to heat, is just wasted as it rises up into your attic. Because your home breathes, it must replace this air with new air. Because the duct design in most Memphis area homes is poor, it cannot get this air in a controlled way. Instead, it gasps and sucks cold air in all around your home from outside – around windows, doors, and through any opening it can find.
Air that is removed through the attic must be replaced. Most people don’t realize that their leaky attic and poor ductwork design for their air conditioning and heating system is forcing their home to suck in the cold dry air from outside through every little crack possible. A properly sealed and insulated attic can assist in keeping your home comfortable especially when paired with other avenues of bringing air into the living space on purpose through proper ductwork design. These things keep the outside air outside where it belongs and your conditioned air (cool air in the summer and warm air in the winter) can circulate properly through your air conditioning and heating system.
This illustration shows warm air leaving (red arrows) the house through the attic and cold air being pulled into the house (blue arrows). Locating these leaks can be difficult because they are often hidden. We have both the experience and equipment to assist us in locating them.
Your Memphis Area Home Gains & Loses Energy in These 3 Ways1. Convection (The transfer of heat by moving air): We all know that warm air rises. Convection is a fancy way of saying that this warm air transfers heat to the ceiling. 2. Conduction (The transfer of heat through a solid material): Heat is transferred from warmer sections of the walls and ceilings to cooler sections.3. Radiation (The transfer of heat in the form of electromagnetic waves): Heat is transferred from the roof to the ceiling.
